Photos in and around the Xixuau-Xiparina Reserve in the Brazilian Amazon. (That's pronounced shee-shoo-ah-oo shi-pa-reen-ya.) The reserve is located 500 km up the Rio Negro and Rio Jauperi from Manaus, Brazil. It is only accessible by a 28-hour ride on a riverboat. Xixuau is a special place: a pristine, remote nature reserve that is home to thirteen native families who are its caretakers and guides for visitors. My week there was a great experience. Read about my journey in the blog, or find out more about the reserve at www.amazoniabr.org.
